A 2D Concept Design To A 3D Dream
when i started my design for my “dream workshop” I would never thought I could bring it so close to life with one 3D model. I started the design of my dream workshop on Draftsight a 2D CAD Program. and fond my self exploring the realms of building and construction design, and all the regulations that go hand-in-hand with them. And by the end of my design (which I wish i could say was finished, but is not) I found a real interest for designing complictaed parts of a building.
The scale drawing of my concept workshop
Half way through the design, I found I had to get from the bottom floor to the first floor, now as we know there are 3 ways of doing this in a building, by Ramp, by Elevator, or by Stairs. Well I whent for the latter of the three and started to work out how I wanted these stairs to look. But more importantly…
- How many?
- By what height?
- And by what depth?
These are very important questions to ask when designing stairs! So I set about with my calculator and BAM I was hooked. These stairs started taking a life of there own in my head. And finally I had the plans strait, and my 2D design was made.

Then when I started using SketchUp I started looking at all the 2D CAD designs in my arsenal, and what designs I wanted to transform into 3D CAD Models. So when I selected these stairs for modelling it was a no brainier, as it was a great design that was well thought out.

A very simple design, but practical to reach the 1st floor 4 meters up.
As you can see well thought out

Well I hope you like my 3D Model, and hope this will inspire more people to look twice at simple parts of bigger designs.
I will be uploading these models to my GrabCAD.com profile, and as always be available on my FREE DOWNLOADS page here
