Designing A Model Airboat To Use On My Local Stream

Article created on 10/10/2011 by Greg Durrant

Well I don’t really know why I have gone for an “AirBoat” but… It will be easy to make with the materials I have to hand. As I have a lot of hardboard laying around in my workshop I am going to build this design which has flat sides so this should be an easy build. To get an idea of what I am trying to build view this google search.

You can see this is my first draft of my AirBoat

Well as I said that I will be building this out of hardboard and I can hear loads of you now shouting “NO!” But I will be covering the boat in waterproof paint and the front and back of the boat will be filled with polystyrene foam for buoyancy. As I have said that I wish to use this in my local stream that has a stretch that is long and strait, so perfect for a bit of fun with an AirBoat I Guess.

2D CAD Layout

I have managed to almost finish the 2D Cad Drawings for all the parts as you can see below. So tomorrow (14th Oct 2011) I am hoping to cut the parts to size and assemble the first prototype.

Once the dimensions are finished I hope to post a Link for the Plans to this design in PDF Format

The Stream

Well this morning i have taken the dog (Boo) for a long walk and decided to take a route that took us pass the site that i want to use my AirBoat. and of course i have taken a load of pictures so here they are in this quick gallery

The Hull

Well I have finished the Hull of my AirBoat Made out of Hardboard, You will see from the pictures in the gallery below the steps that I have taken to make the Hull. Just to give you a quick idea here are the steps I have taken to make the Hull. I marked out the parts of the Airboat Hull on to the spare pieces of hardboard. Then I Cut out the parts on my BandSaw. I then stuck the main parts together with waterproof NoMoreNails. Then I fitted Polystyrene Blocks into the rear and the front of the Hull to give the Airboat Buoyancy.

Well the next step is to paint the Hull with the base coat, so keep coming back to see this project progress…
