A Day Out At PeakRail Sunday 28th Aug 2011

Well the Bank Holiday Came and went, but what did you do?

Well my fiancé and myself had decided to go to Matlock in Derbyshire for the day, and when I Googled Matlock, Peak Rail Railway came up and that was it I had to go. So after I had persuaded my fiancé and grabbed my camera we were off to Peak Rail in Matlock.

Peak Rail is a preservation railway with 3 Stops, you can easily get to Peak Rail from the Matlock Train Station For More details check out http://www.peakrail.co.uk/

But as we got there I had noticed that I had forgotton my memory card for my camra, so I only got 10 photos before the internal memory filled up, So here they are…

The view down the platform from when we got off the train

Me looking well chuffed that we were spending the bank holiday Sunday at a preservation railway (would have been better if I had remembered to bring my memory card tho)

This is the front of the train we caught to get to the main stop to look around

This close up shows that it is 68013

Even though Peak Rail Have a Turntable at the Rowsley South Station unfortunately at Matlock station they have no way of getting the steam engine to the front of the train to take us to Rowsley South, so we were pulled by this well kept Class 31 (sorry I did not get the no. As I am not a train-spotter, I just enjoy the trains)

As walking down the Rowsley rail yard I spotted this great Class 37

This great looking Class 08 sits outside the home of the Heritage Shunters Trust

Then something that took my breath away, was the sight of these two Class 50′s (50029 and 50030) These two magnificent trains are being restored by  Renown Repulse Restoration Group, I must say thank you to the chap that was working on a load of parts for the Class 50′s that afternoon (even though I did not catch his name, but sure you know who you are) For all the information on the project that the  Renown Repulse Restoration Group are doing on these Class 50′s. Even My fiancé was taken in by the talk as you will see in this next picture…

Well what a beautiful sight! And before you think it, I did not make her pose, she wanted her picture taking! So you can guess what my Computer desktop photo is. This has also prompted me to think about getting two Class 50 00 gauge models for my new Layout I am going to build.

Also I would like to thank the chap (again did not catch his name, but sure he knows who he is) from the LMS Carriage Association  that took time to speak to us about the work that the LMS Carriage Association  were doing at Peak Rail. Wish I would have remembered my memory card as would have been great to get some snaps of the carriage he was working on. But I am sure I will be going back in the future…

Well that what I did on the bank holiday Sunday!

NMT test train through Lancaster video from @BrtishRailTV

I find myself while working on my website looking at the www.brtishrailways.tv website, viewing the many great videos that users have uploaded and so I thought I would share this one. And the significance of myself posting this article on this video is that i am planning on getting a 00 model of this NMT, ether with HST’s or DRS Class 37′s (as you will see in the second video on this page,)  and I hope to get this formation in time for my new layout completion (so fingers crossed for me)…

Project ‘Train-Room’ Bringing CAD, Carpentry and Model Railways Together

Well this day has been coming for a while, even though ‘Boddington’ is a great layout that I have created like many other railway modellers we fell the need to expand! And yes I want to expand in a big way, around my household we like to call the room that my layout Boddington resides in the “Train Room” and I want to put a new Layout in there! At the moment I am just calling it “Project Train-Room” but I am sure I will find a suitable name for it as it come together.

The basis or “THE PLAN” for this new layout is based on these principles

  1. The Layout has to fit in “the Train Room”
  2. The “Train Room” must be easily changed in to a single bedroom at short notice (e.g. 2 Hours Notice)
  3. The “Train Room” Can be given a days notice be changed into a twin Bedroom
  4. The Layout must be easily dissembled and stored in my Workshop if need be
  5. The Bed in the “Train Room” Cannot come out

These specs are so that i can keep my partner happy and sill have a great new Layout to work on, So on with the design…

At the moment i only have a few first draft pictures to put up in this post, but as this project expands you will see article grow in great proportion…

This is the orignal 2D CAD Drawing that i have done to get the idea right in my head

A 2D CAD Drawing that i have made to work out the best hight for the layout to avoid the radiator and the window

An overall 3d Sketch of how I want the Layout base to be

This bit of the layout base will be removable to conform to the single bedroom requirement

This is a 3D sketch of how tight it is going to be getting the bed under the layout

The Track Plan

I have designed this track plan on DraftSight, but it gives you a rough idea of how the layout will look. I do have a bundle of drawn plans on paper that i will scan and post when I get chance.

Well I am still in the planning stage, I still have quite a way to go before I can construct this layout. But it will be quite an adventure! Keep coming back to find out how I am getting on….

Almost completed, the track plan for the layout, including the signalling system, next I will be planning the electrics.

Spider Attacks Class 58 at #Boddington! And Gets A #FreeRide

While doing some cleaning I opened the undercarrage of my Class 58 (58001) to find that it had passenger ‘A non-paying one’ I might add! So I took some snap-shots showing the remains of the arachnid passenger.

The remains in a wide angle shot.

Another shot of the remains

The Close up!

But it does go to prove the point that you need to keep and maintain your trains on a regular basis. Seen as this Class 58 is ‘second-hand’ and I had never opened it since I had the train go to ask the question “How long had it been there?” and “Did it mind the noise?”

Two Class 08′s Move A Broken Down Class 58 Round Boddington

I decided the other day to do some more stock changes and experimented with some of my locos. I have this old Class 58 (58001 Hornby DC Loco) that has been made into a “dummy” Loco, due to the motor giving out on it. The idea that I would pull it with a class 08 in one of my videos came to mind, but the problem that the Class 58 is very heavy came up when the Class 08 started to wheel spin.

So time to play! I added another Class 08 to line up, a “Top-And-Tail” as it was. and got some really nice pictures out of this bit of an experiment. Here are the pictures that I came up with.

Here is my Class 08 (Piccadilly, 08673) in a full light shot, with the Class 58 in shot.

The same position as before with ‘Piccadilly’ pushing, but with a ‘Night Time’ Lighting effect.

Class 08 (The Sorter, 08633) pulling the ‘Top-And-Tailed’ Class 58

The Sorter 08633 again pulling the Class58, but with night time lighting and a bit closer up.

It is amazing what you can come up with when you play around with formations, lighting and camera angles. Hope you like these photos and if you want  to see more of ‘Boddington’ then use the menu on the left-hand side of this page to explore all the videos and photos that I have taken of this fun Layout.
